Ford Fiesta 1.4 CXFA 2002 - EAC fault, code P0642 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002
Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 cxfa
( Optional ) ECU Type: Siemens
( Optional ) Scanner Used: ids , picoscope
( Optional) Fault Codes: p0642

Ive got 1.4 16v FXJA fiesta with intermittent Eac fault, when fault occurs it triggers p0642, Eac warning comes on , dash flashes and car struggles to rev and cuts out . Restart and fault goes. I've checked 5v reference voltage at app, ecu and throttle body and ok when fault occurs. Sent throttle body to Actronics and they can't fault. Ive retested reference voltages and ok.
Ids fault code description for P0642 voltage supply to vcc1 short to ground.

Checked earths under battery and ok.
Spoke to Ford technical and they said check wiring, but could not tell me what the acronym vcc1 related to, I presume its the throttle body as if I disconnect app vcc2 fault registers.
Any advice would be appreciated.

There is no mention of that fault code but worth doing anyway.

Hi, ive gone through checking the wiring, and following the tsb.
The car must have had an Ecu fitted by Ford some time ago as a sticker says program with wds! The part numbers on the ecu and throttle body ( 2s6u dc) are the later part numbers.
Fault is still there but can take a couple of days to fail. As soon as you switch back on car is ok, so still havent been able to check 5v reference voltage at Ecu when fault occurs.
I still suspect throttle body.
Any further suggestions will be appreciated

That is the only thing I haven't done.

I cant do it with my Ids as calibration has expired.

I will get the latest calibration done/checked.

Hi, I had ecu recalibrated to latest spec.car still the same, cleaned/checked wiring, ,vigorously wiggled wiring harness when car running and unable to reproduce fault,

Was ok for a couple of days but reoccured. Fault mainly seems to occur when cornering,car runs very rich when fault occurs , if I can keep it running, cant see a fuel restriction would cause this code? I will try and check fuel filter anyway.

Just while ive been testing , if I disconnect the lambda the EAC light flashes.
I'm reluctant to send ecu for test as fault is so intermittent.
Reading ids code description again.
Ids fault description for p0642 is signal reference voltage vcc1,check Map sensor wiring, and popossible ecu fault.
Im getting reference voltage at map and have tried map sensorppreviously.
Is the code misleading me?
Any furthur suggestions?

Hi Kevin,
I havent managed to connect to lds in time yet , Ive only managed to check reference voltage with scope.
I will try with datalogger tomorrow,and try and capture the event.

Hi Dave,
I did test the battery some time ago,and it was poor, dropping to 6 Volts on cranking,so I fitted a new one and tried it, and the same fault still came back, but saying that with the new battery, voltage still dropped down to to 7 Volts when cranking,
So I swapped it back some time ago to keep costs down.
I will try a battery again, as I know there is a fault with it, and I have done a lot of work since then.
I've also noticed if I have my Autel connected and restart the car I loose communication and have restart diagnostic.
Im stiil trying to reproduce fault with IDS datalogger connected.

7 Volts on cranking with good battery is way to low, you need to sort that out next in case it is a power / earth issue

Had a fault like this on a 1.25 fiesta.and traced it back to a big square wiring connector the back of the battery.theres a 10mm headed bolt you undo to split the connector..when we split the connector water came out..a good clean up and been ok for 2 years

Thanks for all the advice, I fitted a new battery and polished all earth connections on the engine and under the battery,voltage now ok on cranking, only drops to 10.2v .
Car ok for the last 4 days of driving. Hopefully now fixed.
I will check the black box on the back of the battery anyway.
I will keep you posted on the outcome.
