Ford Focus 1.6 2008 - MOT Emission failure - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.6 c
( Optional ) Scanner Used: solus

Hi

This car has no fault codes but is failing the emissions test,the lambda is at 1.065 and should be below 1.030 for the mot, there are no exhaust joint leaks no split breather hoses, but when first started it does hunt then settle, it has 4 o2 sensors the front 2 do not seem to switch very much on live data, t had a new coil/plugs and leads 2 months ago

Hi

Did you MOT this in house ?

Worth double checking the MOT specific limits, occasionally Lambda limits are extended to accommodate specif vehicle characteristics.

It does sound like a surplus oxygen issue, have you confirmed gas tester is correct and free of leaks?

Lastly make sure the probe is well in try running emission check with slight restriction in tail pipe i.e. wrap a rag round the probe. If it a large tail pipe pressure pulses can pull external air into tale pipe area.

yes i have done fast idle test on my own machine and stuffed a rag up tail pipe readings are

co 0.00
co2 13.75
Coc 0.00
o2 3.13
lambda 1.069

Too much o2 there, i would say an exhaust leak somewhere, does the rear silencer have a drain hole in the bottom of the box.
Also have you done a leak test on your analyzer?

make sure you do not have a VSI for this make and model of car.

Unfortunately Andy, FYD is an early engine code.
2008 Focus should be a HWD/HXD engine code = 1.03 lambda

The mot was done by a local fast fit and the results are nearly the same as my machine so it must have a problem, there is no drain hole in rear silencer, and the exhaust it the original with not one joint in it so we're else could the air be coming in I have clamped off the breather pipes ?

Just a thought could it be the cam timing I've never done a belt in it, but it does have solenoid on each came so must have VVT

Hi Paul,
You mentioned that the front 2 02 sensors weren't switching very much on live data, can you verify this by testing the 02 sensors either with a scope or voltmeter ?
I think your C02 is slightly low, the cat could be clearing up the C0 and HC's so masking a possible fault.
Testing the pre-cat 02 sensors and fuel trim figures should give you a guide if you are looking for a fault engine side or exhaust side.

Agree with Dave,

What are upstream 02 voltages/trims,

and scope injectors.

Had injectors causing similar symptoms/readings before on Fords

Drill a hole pre cat and test exhaust gas there and you will see the true values.
Make sure you use an extension as you dont want red hot gas going into your gas analyser

I went to remove O2 sensors and the left hand one was loose although you could not hear a blow, I tightened it up and the lambda came down,I removed both of them and cleaned them as it had a misfire caused by a faulty coil pack a few weeks ago which I think might have clogged them up, thanks for your help
