Mini Cooper S 1.6 2007 - Poor idle (Lean) No fault codes - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2007
Engine Size and Code *: 1.6
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Foxwell 644
( Optional) Fault Codes: None

Poor idle, No fault codes.

Appears to be lean (A quick squirt of carb cleaner in the air intake smooth's it out)

Lambda sensor appears to be attempting to switch and it is OK at speed.

Nothing particular stands out in the live data.

I am sensing an intake tract air leak.

However, before attempting to delve a bit deeper, I would be interested if there are any known issues regarding air leaks on this setup and any helpful hints as to where the best place to start looking might be?

I have done the web search without finding anything in particular.

So, I was just wanting to check to see if anybody here might have come across this issue and resolved it.

Paul,

A 4 gas check will confirm that it is in fact running lean. As it appears to be ok at speed, this would point toward an air leak. As a starter, I would spray Easy Start or something similar around the inlet manifold, vac pipes including brake servo to see if that throws up the answer.

For health and safety sake, i would not do that, there are better way,s.

Really? Explain to me and others what the better way is? I and most of the trade it seems use a quick sniff to detect an air leak.

box in diagnostic equipment forum.

Smoke machines certainly have their place, and I love mine, but nothing beats a spray of choke and carb cleaner for finding vacuum leaks

Is it a PSA engine?
If so smoke test it, prone to air leaks, oil filler cap for one would replace anyway.

Sorry for not getting back in this one.

Inlet manifold was full of Black crud. This was cleaned out, but to no avail.

It turned out that the timing chain had jumped a tooth. One new timing chain later and all was well.
