Re: Vietnam"
I rode out the Typhoon at the tip of Chu Lai in barracks buildings built by Seabees in 1967. Our building was being torn down around us and we moved to the center of the building near the showers. I took as many pictures as I had film. My thought was to develop them after the storm at the hobby shop not realizing it would be gone after. When the eye of the storm moved over our company area six guys from another barracks were walking down the center of the company street toward the Mess Hall when the back of the eye moved over. I noticed the roof of the building across the street blowing up an down at the end. Then a section of the entire roof separated (approx 60 ft.) raising up and blowing across the street over the guys walking in the road. I snapped my picture just as they squatting down as the roof flew over them crashing up against our building. Out of my line of sight was the CO of 57th transportation Bat. in his jeep passing I imagine to check on his men. We had a memorial service for him in the chapel the following day. We (226th S&S) had to clean up the company area as best we could and stand guard on the perimeter in the dark each night. However, someone was firing flares over the base all night for illumination. We had to clean our trucks and ship everybody and equipment to Da Nang via LST from the Sand Ramp. In Da Nang we had to clean the trucks again with sharpend coat hangers, while pumping nasty water from Da Nang harbor. I don't remember what happen to our Gun Truck "Hallucination". It was exceptional construction as we cut our wall panels from a beached Navy bouy with steel nearly an inch thick. The lettering job could have been better but, two of us were up all night painting the truck drinking beer, which wasn't a problem until we ran out of paint thinner and had to thin the paint with gasoline. Its a wonder we even finished. I have pictures of our truck and a few others but, unfortunately, the pics of the storm I put my (undeveloped film) in my foot locker and shipped it home however, the MPs broke the cannisters and exposed the film.
