The Registrar of Deaths would not accept the doctor's entry on the certificate as to cause of death. I do not know the details and cannot ask the widow at this sad time for her. Because of the lack of a certificate, the undertakers could or would not make their arrangements for some time.
Can a Registrar overrule a doctor in a case like this?
When I got married in Poole in Dorset in the 60s, my husband and I (plus a few family members) were squeezed into a rather shabby and small office, along with the filing cabinets and office furniture, whilst the Registrar wrote the certificate with a pen which he dipped into an inkwell. The pen made scratching noises as he wrote and it was difficult not to giggle.
