I think the argument that we should wear masks to protect others is specious, because if we are coughing and spluttering with CV infection then we shouldn't be walking around in a public place, and probably wouldn't be anyway. If we know we aren't infectious, because we aren't coughing, then why would we want to protect others from ourselves? The WHO doesn't actually have much recommendation on mask wearing. not that it can be trusted a priori of course. There is also evidence masks make it more likely your own breathing will be affected and make you more susceptible to any virus particles flooding in through the mask.
