South Africa has no other vaccine available (pending new stocks) apart from the J&J, which is not a roll-out but a modest "study trial", in experimental stage.
But yesterday, S. Africa halted the J&J vaccine, after reports of blood clots.
They take their cue from the US head office, which paused production of J&J a few days ago, for the same reason.

Some desperate South Africans are crossing the border to Zimbabwe for their jabs and therapeutic meds. Zimbabwe has plentiful supplies of the Chinese vaccine Sinopharm and all pharmacies carry Ivermectin, which is proving to be a helpful game-changer as it is effective against all variants.
Ivermectin went off patent with Merck years ago. Merck now joins WHO in bad-mouthing this affordable anti-viral (from which it can no longer benefit)- even as it is rumoured to be formulating a new patented (profitable) version of this same drug
