I remember him taking the side of the people of Grenada after Reagan invaded the island and quashed the revolution. More recently, he travelled several times to Syria and pledged his solidarity with the people and their government in the face of unrelenting, vicious attempts at regime change. He was unafraid of the dangers he faced and of speaking his mind.
