Re: Table Mountain fire 'burns out of control' in Cape Town
'Of course. I speak not to 'right wing outlets' though, and only refer to the cases of documented arson in South Africa, which is common and the subject of quite a few academic studies.' - glad we agree on that. I didn't mean to cast doubt on what you were saying about arsonists in SA, just noticed your above reference to the claims in Australia about the 2020 fires over there and it reminded me of how they were made out to be more significant than they actually were (apparently most of the big fires were caused by dry lightning in remote areas whereas the human-caused fires were more easily spotted and dealt with before they got out of control). But yes, it sounds like the situation is different in SA, luckily in some ways, less so in others.
I see it's the second time I've replied to a points you've made by posting a potholer debunking video which only addresses them only obliquely. Sorry about that, I'll try to address them directly in my own words next time.
Messed up about the Packenham bloke. A very colonial attitude to impose your own prejudices about what a landscape should look like over what the ecology of the place actually needs. The Israelis planting pine forests over cleared Palestinian villages have been facing similar consequences, see here: https://www.jonathan-cook.net/2017-12-01/forest-fires-israel-goats-zionism/
