Sir Keir Starmer pulled out of attending an interfaith event after being alerted to the controversial views of one of its organisers by the Board of Deputies.
Labour sources confirmed the Leaders Office took on board concerns from the Board raised about Omar Salha, chief executive of the Ramadan Tent Project, who had previously supported the controversial Cage group.
Keir had been asked to attend a virtual Iftar event on Wednesday, but his office decided to cancel the engagement.
On Tuesday, the Board’s Tal Ofer tweeted he was “glad to see that after I raised this issue Keir Starmer withdrew his participation from the event.”
On Monday Chigwell and Hainault Synagogue deputy Ofer had shared CEO Salha’s previous sharing of a demand by the Friends of Al Aqsa group for a boycott of Israeli dates.
Labour sources said the decision not to attend the event was relayed to the organisers in advance.
Why didn't he just tell them he couldn't attend because he had got his dates mixed up?
