the judge in the case basically nudged the defence as to a potential cause for appeal:
Nelson also sought a mistrial over comments by a member of Congress, Maxine Walters, who called for protesters to “get more confrontational” if Chauvin were acquitted. The judge, Peter Cahill, refused to motion but criticised Walters and said she may have provided grounds for appeal.
“I’ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” he said.
This is even before he gets sentenced which is when we'll see how far they want to push it.
AS for Chauvin he is in PC (Protective Custody; essentialy solitary) until he's sentenced and presumably afterwards too; he only has one choice from the traditional menu for prisoners of "Buck, #### or Lock-up". If he goes in any facility that isn't all white he's toast even if he gets some protection from the AB and they are not exactly fans of law enforcement.
