Re: Hedges does Jesus
Some interesting bits, but I thought it was a little like he was trying to discredit some of the diversity of ideas from 'gnostic' chrtistianity generally via talking about the King woman (and chucking in some 'postmodernism-bad' for good measure) maybe I'm being unfair (I did skim it quite quickly) - I know he's a christian (pastor?) so fair enough for him having opinions favourable to his own faith I guess. I like reading stuff like the recently found gospel of judas ("I come from the sacred realm of Barbelo"), learning about the diversity of ideas in early christianity is fascinating to me (as a non christian). While too much is often made by some of what were probably quite obscure writings in their day, at the same time, there were no gnostic christians back in the first millennium - they all thought they were the proper chrtistians, only happenstance of history says which particular branch we ended up with as our main theology (Augustine or Marcion etc). We might all have grown up learning about the garden of eden where God/Yahweh was the baddie (demiurge) trying to trap us in the prison of matter, and the serpent was the goodie (Sophia?) trying to set us free etc.
Regardless of what King got up to, I find the usual standard criticism of postmodernism a bit annoying to be honest, whether or not the criticisms are valid for this or that individual - whether following Hicks or Chomsky there often seems to be some bad faith arguments in these sorts of critiques - that's not to Stan for the Pomo particularly, just preferring to treat the varied arguments labelled this way in their own terms, fairly and with a bit of nuance (probably not that popular an opinion on here - don't shout at me!
