I was amazed they gave him a stay let alone a commutation but of course they are counting on the interest to fade now that he's not on Death Row, which to a certain extent it will. It's much harder to generate noise and interest (and heat and annoyance for the authorities) when someone is doing life and not in danger of execution. The main legal issue now seems to be whether the governor is legally allowed to specify a sentence life with the possibility of parole, which he currently claims not to be, hence the commutation to life without.
