International law says specifically that asylum seekers don't have to apply in the first 'safe' country they end up in, for a very good reason: if they did, places further 'south' would end up with all of them (more than they already are anyway). The uk helped write that law (maybe it was out of guilt about how we dealt with jewish refugees (or not)). We're not in the EU anymore so we don't get to talk about the Dublin agreement either.
France/EU has no obligation to stop anyone coming to the uk - that's our business (they already take much more people than we do).
The uk says it wants to stop any 'illegal' migrants getting to Britain, and send them back if they do, and that they should apply in the first safe country (though not for the uk) - this just means we never accept anyone doesn't;'t it?
