I think there's a difference between stupidity and being a victim of propaganda, though. You can educate & inform someone who is ignorant by accident, but someone who has swallowed propaganda, especially when it comes to the point where they have built a whole identity & sense of worth on top of false assumptions and premises (eg: the whole nexus of rationalisations that have to be in place before you can view Amazon as a 'legitimate company trading legitimately' as one of the DM comments asserted), when you try to change their minds they will actively resist and dig their heels in because it's viewed - probably correctly - as a threat to their whole concept of who they are
It reminds me of the study quoted in Jeff Schmidt's 'Disciplined Minds' which found that blue collar workers were more likely to be morally opposed to the Vietnam war than the highly educated, including the students generally perceived as leading the protests against it. Sometimes being smart just makes you better at lying to yourself and coming up with excuses for your own shitty behaviour.
