Just a few days after that March 2011 catastrophe, Rob Fyfe, the CEO of Air New Zealand went on television to assure New Zealanders that the experts were all exaggerating, and that it was "perfectly safe" to fly to Tokyo. As he spoke, Japanese officials were seriously considering a call to evacuate Tokyo. Of course that did not happen, but it shows just how grave and volatile the situation was.

To my knowledge, Fyfe is yet to apologise for that gruesome performance.

A few years before that, Fyfe had presided over Air New Zealand (our state owned airline) illegally and secretly transporting Australian and American troops to Iraq.

Air NZ's illegal transportation of troops to Iraq severely embarrassed and outraged the Labour Government. However, instead of firing him, prosecuting or even just shunning him, they did the opposite. Instead of being in prison, Fyfe was appointed as the Government's highly paid "Covid-19 Business Advisor"--“I really enjoy nutting my way through a really really difficult issue"--and made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (our equivalent of a knighthood) for services to business and tourism.
