I'm not sure about people not knowing about it - it's been quite popular as a cult film in my circles for a couple of decades; and almost ubiquitous in memes - I've heard it be co-opted in various directions too - personally I think the glasses are meant to represent acid - exhibit A: they call them Hoffman lenses
