I think this is one of the greatest poems by an Englishman and it's criminally underrated by the custodians of culture. I love JCC and can see how he might slip under their radar with some of his lesser stuff, but in "Beasley Street" he crosses the line into true literary genius. Perhaps a few too many uncomfortable truths in there.
...no amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party...So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.
