Ultimately, working from within a non-democratic system, maybe the most we could have hoped for is that it would be education on the nature of system - it was for some (mostly people who knew the basics already), but for many it has now passed into mediated 'history' as cartoon examples of why socialism is bad, like the monstering of foot and Benn before.

I'd say the hope is still necessary (the non false variety), just not sufficient - even if only limited hopes like hoping we don't fall for too many false hopes. This asymmetry is always how it's been for socialism (first they ignore you etc)
