THe 23 million odd citizens of Taiwan have rights to govern themselves,
Don't they effectively have that now in a carefully nuanced situation of 'strategic ambiguity'? What would they gain by turning their back on the 'one China' position recognised by most of the world by trying to assert de jure independence?
Why provoke China to serve as a pawn to US geostrategic interests?
Apart from the fact that Taiwan is historically part of Chine, how could anyone expect that China would be able to allow Taiwan to have full sovereign independence and thus possibly allow US nuclear missiles to be sited on its soil pointing at China, the US's main geostrategic rival?
