Breaking the Vicky Pollardisation of class tourism TV
There's nothing unusual about Mick Lynch and Eddie Dempsey - I grew up surrounded by guys like them. What is unusual is that folk outside their own circles are getting the opportunity to see and hear them. Too often, too many get their ideas about people like Messrs Lynch and Dempsey from class tourism TV - obese, not very bright etc etc. It's very easily forgotten that the working classes have a rich intellectual history - smart people often forced to educate themselves in he teeth of great difficulties.
I'm a great fan of 'Talking Pictures", the freeview channel dedicated to showing old, often British movies. Watch it regularly and you'll see a lot of films telling stories of working class lives. Once upon a time - now largely gone - it was thought that working class people had interesting stories to tell. How often do you see that in the cinema today? I really hope Messrs Lynch and Dempsey break the Vicky Pollardisation of working people.
