My assumption is that Putin himself and his military top brass believed it would be more or less Mission Accomplished in a month - like most leaders who're either forced into war or invent brazen lies(eg.WMD) to justify a war.
A few weeks of Shock & Awe - job done. Bush provided the blood-soaked blueprint and the short war precedent for others to delusionally emulate and believe in.
