Banking is essentially a massively complicated magic trick. It's vitally important that people believe in it. However, if people suddenly realize it nothing more than an elaborate magic trick, and it isn't reality at all, then, the magic 'spell' is broken and the illusion falls apart, often with spectacular results to follow.
