Climate activist Greta Thunberg has backed the continued use of nuclear power plants that are still in operation in Germany, fuelling a heated debate over runtime extensions as the government struggles to find a unified position on the matter. Speaking with German TV station ARD, the founder of the Fridays for Future student protest movement said it was a "mistake to close them down in order to focus on coal." The government has so far missed two deadlines to change laws requiring the decommissioning of all nuclear power plants in the country by the end of this year. Thunberg’s remarks drew support from nuclear advocates not usually associated with strong climate action. [UPDATE: adds paragraph on chancellor Scholz promising prompt decision.]
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has called on Germany to keep using its running nuclear plants instead of increasing coal power. “It’s a very bad idea to focus on coal when this is already in place,” Thunberg told public broadcaster ARD in an interview. “If we have them already running, I feel like it’s a mistake to close them down in order to focus on coal." - https://www.cleanenergywire.org/news/greta-thunbergs-pro-nuclear-comment-stirs-german-runtime-extension-debate
Agreed, greens could/should be making the point about the connections between militarism and ghg emissions & environmental destruction. But still, it's a pointless swipe from Christoforou. If he feels strongly about it why doesn't he organise a protest instead of bitching about other people who are already active on other issues?
