For decades now the 'analysts' have been undermined and pushed aside because they were 'ideological' enough and, irritatingly, kept bringing up unpleasant details about 'Reality' which tended to put the brakes on the more outlandish and adventurous attitudes that were gaining ground in Washington.
Things really turned for the worse in the run up to the attack on Iraq. Here the analysts told the White House that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction and were effectively disarmed. That wasn't what the politicians wanted to hear and culled the agency.
