When in trouble, you can't get anything right. Critics can't even decide if the watch is worth €80,000 or forty times less. I think his action shows an admirable multitasking ability and situational awareness - aware his watch was banging on the table as he performs his typical Gallic gesturing, he unobtrusively removed it whilst continuing his interview unperturbed.
