I recall going to a lecture by a gay marxist in the late 60s. It was unusual, but then, at the time, it was fun in a sense there were no barriers to conversations. I also recall seeing shows by gay maoists commune in the early 70s. Avant garde and all that.

There is a similar shift in pop/rock music from 60s onwards. What used to be just fun, the capitalism took it seriously enough and started making money and we ended up with crappy vanilla products (date unspecified) - it wasn't of the people and by the people, but for the consumers.
