Good of you to remind us doctors should be concerned with causes, thus, it is rather strange many surgeons are advocating radical surgery as a panacea to young adults having issues with sexuality/gender/status.
So, as with you, I'd like to know how we have so many persons claiming they are transgender, or whatever else they desire to call themselves. In the UK, on university campus's the issue did not exist during my own time in HE utilising three institutions in both England and Wales up to 1996 - indeed, the big issue within the LBGT community was AIDS and helping students come to terms with their own sexuality, which was undertaken with sensitivity - I must say, it was all very inclusive and, persons could also have some fun.
I think 1996 is important here, because its when a viable treatment to combat HIV became widely available, meaning fear of intercourse was reduced greatly - Christ, they scared the pants off us in the 80's, i.e., not only HIV, but the threat of nuclear war.
