It's a sign, like the raids into Russia, that the Ukrainians are getting desperate to do show their western backers/controllers, that they aren't a spent force and, therefore, need even more weapons and support, which, apparently will put them on the road to final victory. Without some sign of the tide changing soon, support from the West will start to wane, especially as the US election looms on the horizon. So, the hapless Urkrainian conscripts are being sacrificed for what amounts to a PR stunt, a propaganda offensive, theatre that's meant to disguise what's really going on.
