So I'll try yet again: Cuban Missile Crisis - even McGovern fails to mention that it was in fact provoked by the US who had placed Jupiter nuclear missiles in Turkey AND Italy in 1961 - the year BEFORE Soviet Russia understandably responded by placing nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962.
Be in no doubt that those Jupiter nukes were far more devastatingly powerful than those dropped on Hiroshima/Nagasaki 17 years earlier and could have wiped out Moscow and Leningrad(St.Petersburg) and effectively most of Soviet Russia within 30 minutes and rendered much of Eastern Europe and beyond contaminated, irradiated and uninhabitable for decades, agriculture non-viable, water un-drinkable and unuseable etc
Even Wikipedia - unlike Ray and a zillion others - gets it bang-on right:
"In 1961 the US government put Jupiter nuclear missiles in Italy and Turkey, and attempted to invade Cuba. Starting in November of that year the US government engaged in a campaign of terrorism and sabotage in Cuba, referred to as the Cuban Project, which continued throughout the first half of the 1960s. In response to these factors, Soviet First Secretary, Nikita Khrushchev, agreed with the Cuban Prime Minister, Fidel Castro, to place nuclear missiles on the island of Cuba to deter a future invasion. "
Remember that those rarely-mentioned Jupiter missiles that the US had provocatively placed in Turkey AND Italy could have wiped out both Moscow and Leningrad (now St.Petersburg) in less than 30 minutes. Repeat: Russia responded to that double (Turkey+Italy) US nuclear provocation by placing nuclear missiles in Cuba.
But then - as now with Russia's invasion of Ukraine - our media, politicians, "expert" pundits etc tell us that it was evil, wicked Russia who were the provocateurs. Even McGovern seems to have forgotten that it was the US who recklessly provoked Castro into placing Soviet nukes in Cuba in 1962 - a year AFTER the US provocatively stationed Jupiter nukes in Turkey AND Italy !!!
Jump to 18'10" - McGovern empathises with JFK's response to,er, Russia's Cuba nuclear provocation - with no mention of Turkey or Italy:
