Odd word "asylum" ain't it - ie. victims of the US-run madhouse/lunatic asylum are forced to seek asylum and refuge in relatively sane countries or their embassies.

Just as odd as the word "sanction" - if you sanction something you are giving it your approval but if you impose sanctions you're doing almost the polar opposite - expressing your extreme disapproval by banning X,Y & Z.
Try teaching and explaining all of that to EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students and they'll think you're off yer rocker..
