I wonder if the govt/media/spooks knew just how threadbare the narrative was but decided to push it anyway as a form of humiliation: "you will believe whatever nonsense we tell you, and even convince others to believe it because we have the power and you have to obey and conform, no matter how absurd and counterfactual the stories become". Seem to recall Orwell made similar points. I'm sure the ptb get a perverted, even sexual thrill out of manipulating the public conversation in this way. They're laughing in our faces and most don't even realise it.
