It's easy to see now that the USSR was a countervailing influence on the USSA and that its absence freed America's rulers to do what they wanted, rather than what they should. It's something of a surprise that the US imperium lasted only about thirty years but perhaps also evidence that the US policy of sabotaging potential rivals had run its course. Lucky are the Russians who have got their sovereignty back and happen to be sitting on all that gas and oil.
