I think he's exaggerating the significance of Nat Turner's... rampage. It's become a kind of myth, for the left almost a dogma. Arguably, the reaction of the surrounding white society, which launced a crackdown and became even more paranoid and isolationist, probably made things worse for the enslaved population, empowered white extremists and undermined the reformers in the South.
