The great expansion of higher education over the last few decades, has been a mixed blessing, because, in reality, an awful lot of people aren't intellectually cut out for it.
I used to believe, or think, that intelligence was equally spread out in the population. It isn't. My daughter has just abandoned her career teaching in a highschool because she's convinced that 90% of her stundents shouldn't be there at all, but should have learned a practical trade and skills instead. Only the status isn't in being a skilled tradesman, it's in book learning. Great for those who love and devour books, only her students weren't really all that keen on reading long and complex texts.
