It's pretty obvious that if the West is going to maintain its economic/social/political/cultural 'leadership' of the world, it has to gain free and unfettered access to the vast resource wealth of the Great Eurasian landmass, which mostly comprises Russia. Somehow, if we are to remain 'on top of the world' we have to bring both Russia and China, down, to a manageable size. Together, they pose a threat to the West that hasn't existed for centuries.
Of course, given the real threat to us, which is runaway climate change and massive ecological disruption; it would be infinitely preferable to share the burdens and responsibilities, the dangers we face collectively. Cooperate, instead of confrontation, divert the resources to sensible things, not war. But that's not how the West is configured. We gained our position through expansion, war and conquest. It's what we know and do best, for over four centuries. Our leaders and the warlike culture they are part of, isn't going to channge voluntarily, unfortunately. Liberal democracy is going to whither away, it has to, because opposition to the path we'r on, cannot be tolerated.
