The West has, I believe, created a kind 'Frankenstein's Monster' in Israel which could turn and bite us, especially Europe which is within the range of Israel nuclear-armed missiles. I once heard a French diplomat allude to this fact as one of the reasons the Europeans wanted to remain on good terms with Israel, at least publically.
In 'normal times' Israel is split down the middle politically between 'left' and 'right', though they are all nationalists and supremacists in relation to the Arabs. Not long ago half the country was out on the streets demanding that the fascist leader Nethanyahu resign as he was a threat to Israeli democracy.
Just a quick look at the map and the demographics of the region, and one can see that Israel doesn't have a future in its current aparheid configuration. They can't remain a 'western' colonial entity forever. They have to integrate into the wider Middle East as yet another minority, like they always were. Only this 'peace process' of necessity and realistically means the virtually end of the maximalist dogmas of Zionism.
