Both NatGeographic and Menzies used the Korean map of the world showing Africa, from 1300s, as a reference:
Btw, Chinese junks were much more flexible than Caravels, in terms of going against the wind, if you look at the sails they used:

The Northern route still seems speculative methinks. I can't find any evidence for it.
