As I recall the glorious attraction of "free money" didn't just sucker the stupid in there either. A major investor in the SSB who apparently ended up loosing his shirt on it was Isaac Newton: no mean geek but also Master of the Royal Mint.
Newton is claimed to have said of it all that: "...he could calculate the motions of the heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people".
