This is what we're up against
Teams of lawyers from the rich and powerful trying to stop us publishing stories they don’t want you to see.
Lobby groups with opaque funding who are determined to undermine facts about the climate emergency and other established science.
Authoritarian states with no regard for the freedom of the press.
Bad actors spreading disinformation online to undermine democracy.
***
But we have something powerful on our side.
We’ve got you.
The Guardian is funded by its readers and the only person who decides what we publish is our editor.
********
*We want to be free to speak openly about what is happening in Gaza, the genocide being conducted by the Israeli regime, and to rally support for international action to prosecute theseh war crimes and those responsible.
*We want to highlight the brutality and injustice Julian Assange has suffered and to campaign for his immediate release.
*We want to redress the vitriolic media campaign against Jeremy Corbyn and to expose the Israeli embassy in London for its role in manufacturing anti-semitic slurs against him with no basis in fact. And also to name and shame the media that was complicit in this charade.
*We want to speak freely and frankly about the lies Keir Starmer has told since becoming leader of the Labour party and to hold him to account for his duplicity and lack of principles.
*We want to investigate the university authorities clamping down on pro-Palestinian student protests and to discover their motivation and what political pressures they are facing and succumbing to -- and who is exerting that pressure.
[The above is a genuine statement from the Guardian, with the exception of the last five points.]
