I suspect the double barrel really means military...and whoever thought of an English farmer as "working class" ?...kinda suspect Starmer-type fibs: "Dad was a toolmaker..." when he owned the factory.
But alas...I suppose a young fuddy duddy espousing Warm Beer and Cricket provides a clear career trajectory. I can't really see the rush though unless "getting down with the Gammons" to some old George Formby numbers becomes the new ironic high.
