But to say so in wartime is a crime – in Berlin, Ottawa, Warsaw. Wherever you are, once you are in war, free speech doesn’t exist any longer. Truth telling is replaced by propaganda narratives enforced by censors and security services.

According to Tasnim, the news agency of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), “new details have emerged about the assassination of head of the political bureau of the Hamas resistance movement, Ismail Haniyeh, in Teheran. The assassination attack took place at around 2 am local time Wednesday. The Hamas chief, who was in Teheran to attend the new Iranian president’s swearing-in ceremony, was martyred in a special residence in northern Teheran after being hit by an aerial projectile. The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said the attack is under investigation and the results will be announced later.”

The official Russian reaction to the Haniyeh killing was broadcast by the Russian Foreign Ministry which identified the attack as “a missile strike on his residence in Teheran”. It is “obvious”, the ministry statement continued, “those who organised this political assassination understood that these actions were fraught with dangerous consequences for the entire region.”

The Russian military bloggers are uncharacteristically silent on what happened; this indicates there are no leaks from Defense Ministry nor briefings by military intelligence sources. While the Foreign Ministry appears to be ruling out the possibilities of a drone attack launched from within Iran or the detonation of a bomb inside Haniyeh’s residence, Russian officials are not identifying Israel as the origin or the Israel Air Force as the missile launch source.

For remedy, the Russians “reaffirm…it is necessary to exercise maximum restraint. We urge all parties to behave responsibly and to refrain from any actions that can bring the situation out of control.” This appears to be addressed to Iran because, truth to be told, it is too late for Israel.
