Their promotion of fear reminded me of the control freakery of the clergy of old: enhancing their own powebase by promoting the idea of an "enemy within" ..." Building a world of danger where we are surrounded by "hidden forces" lurking just around every corner: wild men, evil spirits, goblins...witches...Russians!
-And of course we need a strong MI5-clergy to keep us safe from them...
