Agreed, it's tiresome. Probably an attempt to make a scientific subject 'engaging' to the lay reader. For some reason they judge that the multiple catastrophes under discussion aren't engaging enough by themselves. Sadly, judging by the extreme alienation of the general population, they're probably right to include the padding so people don't switch their brains off, stop reading and go and self-medicate some more by watching cat videos on youtube.
