It has a huge trade surplus with the US paid in dollars...and there's an ever growing restriction on US assets that China is allowed to buy with those dollars...even as Individuals.

So...getting rid of them is a problem thus it stashes the dollars as bonds...which of course supports the dollar as the reserve currency.
China has to move away from the US export market to break this cycle: there's a strong possibility
that US hostility designed to curb Chinese manufacturing domination will in fact have the unintended effect of making this easier.
