It has in the past been used in Western propaganda where the far eastern nationalists, commies... socialists etc were depicted as the poisonous many headed Hydra which regenerated its heads when cut off.
One of my old man's Korean war medals depicts the hydra being vanquished where obviously the victorious west appears in the guise of Heracles...
