Been listening on BBC Sounds to This Cultural Life with John Wilson interviewing Ken Loach in October 2022. They covered his early social dramas such as Up the Junction, Cathy Come Home and Kes. Then Wilson asked Loach why he hadn't made other types of films, such as romcoms and musicals, to provide a broader perspective, implying that his output had suffered from being confined to working class stories. In his mild-mannered way, Loach said, (I'm paraphrasing) "Would you have asked the directors of The Crown or Richard Curtis why they hadn't made more socially aware dramas to widen their perspectives?" And Wilson muttered, "Yes of course I would" which is obviously a load of cobblers and exposes Wilson's rigid BBC mindset as assuming those other directors were doing it right while Loach was stuck in a rut and needed to broaden his viewpoint. Of course Wilson wouldn't be in that job to start with had he not thought his question perfectly valid and obvious.
