Yes, I thought it was notable that they reflexively go to that old colonial standby of dehumanising language, pretending to be 'civilised' in comparison. Of course the Roman empire always committed far worse atrocities on a far greater scale than the tribal peoples it demonised, before slaughtering & conquering them in turn. As I understand it the word came from Romans mocking the sound of the languages they spoke, how very enlightened...
