I agree with the idea that his stance on the apartheid state (at that time very outstpoken not least for someone of his stature) was some attempt at atonement. But, and this is where I find people who find it inconvenient raise their eyebrows and sigh when you tell them, he would be up on the gallows with the all the postwar US presidents as war criminals following the Nuremberg standards.
