A country with failing democratic institutions
A country with sociopathic inequalities
A country with a burgeoning population that we can't look after
A country with mountainous, unpayable debts
A country with a hollowed out manufacturing infrastructure.
A country with unsustainable ecological crises
Spending more money on defence is criminal. How can we fight any sort of enemy if we haven't got a steel industry, a chemical industry, a manufacturing industry, an electronics industry, sufficient power, etc? What are the army, the airforce and the navy supposed to be physically backed with? Chinese imports?
The use of drones and other modes of warfare in Ukraine have totally transformed warfare. The threat of nuclear weapons makes any serious war unwindable.
Spend the money on basic infrastructure, human development and ecological sustainability. Abandon growth, have a population policy (ie a cap with the ultimate aim of reducing the UK population to 40 million over 150 years) , divest from nuclear weapons, overseas bases and a defence force that wishes to project "power", but instead is based entirely on the defence of the realm. so. re-examine ever aspect of "defence", not "war" or "adventure" Stop making enemies and make some friends, we might need them. And we might them end up safer than all the weapons in the world could do.
